Project Update: 09 May 2025

Thank you to everyone that’s taken part so far in our ‘If Homes Could Talk’ connected homes research.

We’re currently interviewing landlords and suppliers to get deeper qualitative data on their experiences of using connected homes technology and the barriers to its wider use.

These sessions are giving rich insights and are already starting to identify some potential solutions to deployment barriers, which might enable faster roll-out of smart home technology.

Findings from the interviews so far are that:

  • There’s a broadly shared vision about the potential of smart homes
  • The sector is not currently moving successfully from pilots to embedded practice
  • There is a significant barrier between data collection and using it in revised operational practices
  • Culture and capability within key staff teams are hard to shift
  • Ethics and trust with residents are critical aspects of smart homes at scale, and
  • Too often organisations try to roll out devices before they are fully ready.

We’re still carrying out some interviews but are also planning our next steps.

Those are:

  • To hear the tenant experience through a series of workshops
  • To explore use cases around how smart homes can help create healthy, sustainable homes; and
  • To explore the business case for using smart devices to automate compliance.
