What we do

HouseTest has developed a DNA analysis for mould that can conclusively demonstrate the extent of problematic mould growth in buildings.

HouseTest’s DNA analysis involves collecting dust or air samples from the building in question and sending it to our laboratory.

The DNA analysis that HouseTest undertakes is able to detect mould growing out of sight. This limits the amount of destructive investigatory work required to diagnose mould problems.

What we can help you with

Mould feeds on organic matter, which can be found in people’s homes in abundance. Some of the most common forms of building material, including wood, wallpaper and glue are made of organic materials and potentially provide mould with nutrients.

Mould does not always grow on visible surfaces such as walls, ceilings or floors. It often grows out of sight behind them.

HouseTest’s test for mould DNA helps householders and specialist mould surveyors in the UK detect hidden mould growing in their homes and workplaces.

Our solution

The test is bases qPCR (Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction) a technique used to identify microbial material, including bacteria, viruses and fungi. The technique was first developed in the early 1980s and became widely used in microbiological research in the 2000s.

Using qPCR also makes it possible to accurately determine the species of mould that are present. This allows analysts to distinguish between species that are naturally present in the outdoor air and species that only grow in damp indoor environments. In other words, accurately identifying mould species makes it possible to distinguish between problematic mould growth and mould more generally.

Case study - Scandinavia

qPCR testing technology means that mould testing is now a highly accurate and efficient process: samples are quick and easy to collect, meaning that multiple properties can be screened in a short amount of time.

qPCR mould testing is therefore especially well suited to mass-testing large numbers of properties. Our experience from Scandinavia shows that mass testing is especially effective when triaging properties for renovation or prioritising works.
